This past weekend Doublewide, the club Open team out of Austin, Texas, was the surprise winner of the South Region, defeating favorite Chain Lightning from Atlanta, Georgia. Doublewide standout cutter Kiran Thomas has graciously given us a recap of this past weekend’s events.

For the first time since the nation was divided into eight Regions instead of just five, every Region should get two bids this season. The Southwest last season, the Central before it, the South for several seasons, and even the mighty Northwest have all agonized through seasons with only one Bid.

Twenty five years have passed after the first game of Ultimate Frisbee was played in South Africa, but the sport is definitely not getting old.

This was proved at the biggest tournament on the Ultimate Frisbee calendar, the South African National Championships, which was held over two days at Bergvliet High School.

The Region that has suffered through the most one bid seasons since the redraw in 1998 will have to sweat out a few more weeks before it will know if it claimed the final Size Bid for the 2008 College Championships.

This weekend kicks off the official start of the College Series. The So Cal and Washington/BC Sectionals are two of the strongest in the nation this year and feature teams that are in the mix for the title. The South Section features three teams that were national-caliber last year and find themselves in the new position of being the challengers.

This week The Huddle is proud to present a very special Feature on the 2008 UPA Board of Directors Election. This year seats are open for the Central and South Regions, as well as for two expiring At Large spots.

The title says it all. These three regions are the most likely to produce the 2008 womens national champion.
