The Australian Ultimate Frisbee Championships will be held in Coffs Harbour, starting today.

While most people throw a frisbee to their dog or friends at the beach, a Turramurra teenager will soon travel the world to do it.

Although Frisbee is popular on Myers quad and other campus locales, the women's ultimate Frisbee club team plays for more than recreation. The team refers to itself as the Hodawgs. "Ho" stands for horizontal, team members said, the position of a player outstretched for a Frisbee.

This time of year, cities around the country gear up for summer Ultimate Frisbee Leagues. Several thousand people play on the elite and college circuits; tens of thousands more play for fun, fitness and the "spirit of the game." At least that's what the brochure says. For those who play Ultimate, sex and their favorite sport are often entwined.

At Naperville's Ashbury Park today, you'll see Frisbees flying, guys running, friends cheering, teams celebrating. But while the game of Ultimate Frisbee is fascinating to watch, it's the behind-the-scenes action that makes the Naperville Ultimate Frisbee Summer League different from most of the city's sporting ventures.

Over the last few months I have come to realize that basketball and ultimate are very similar and in looking at one, you can make inferences on the other. When considering these things I thought I would share some thoughts.
